‘OAKWOOD BEAM’ FUNGI-RICH TEA – BRACEWELL TRIALS
Grass measurement posts – suggestions Vs 2 – Nov 2
We need two posts: one for the treated area and one for the control area.
. 2 x 1.8 m star pickets
(The ones in the photo are not fully driven as I have to pull them out soon.)
. 2 lengths of 1.2 m 90mm PVC storm drain pipe.
. 11 Glue-on figures from 1 – 10 and three extra 1s. (The shop ran out, hence no 11 yet.)
Size: 70mm x 43 mm
(Make sure they are flexible, stiff ones can’t be attached to a pipe.)
2 rolls of cloth tape, one black and one red as these show-up best.
(I used rolls 48mm wide and 4.5m long. Cut a snip at 2 cm: it tears cleanly from there.)
Marking the pipe
Draw a line from end to end on the pipe.
. (To guide the numbers in a straight vertical line)
Mark the 100mm distances
Draw a line around the pipe
(Use a piece of line to as shown.)
Tear a strip of black cloth tape and stick it below the bottom line with the top just touching the line.
Next do a strip of red on the next line and mark all lines as shown.
The numbers.
Place the first number above the strip just touching it and starting at the bottom.
Use even numbers only on one post and uneven ones for the other.
(We use the uneven numbers for the treated areas and the even numbers for controls. There will be less chance of mix-ups when we compare photos across various sites if we all do that. Or look at them in future years.)
Skip the next strip and place the next number
Taking photos
Place the post 5 m from the fixed point from where you’ll take photos.
Keep the top of the post at the top of the picture, as in the photo.
(That provides details such as grass height and flower spikes on grass needed to make decisions and comparisons.)
Try and take photos at the same time of day.
Avoid intruding objects such as branches and shadows.
